Quebec City, the beautiful capital of the Canadian province of Quebec, is located at the narrowing of the St. Lawrence River where its old, fortified city walls are key to the city being a World Heritage Site. One of the oldest cities in North America, Quebec City's skyline is dominated by the famous Chateau Frontenac hotel.

Well-known festivals, 'neck-breaking' steps

Home to more than a half million people, Quebec City has 37 national historical sites, a well-known Winter Carnival, a fun summer music festival and distinguished architectural buildings. Its upper town and lower town are linked by the L'Escalier Casse-Cou, or "neck-breaking steps" and a funicular. The city's economy is dominated by public administration, defense, service, transportation and tourism. About 10 percent of local jobs are in manufacturing. About two-thirds of residents speak French only, with the other third also speaking English.
